Progression and Extent of Rim Fire Mapped

The Rim Fire near California's Yosemite National Park is the largest wild fire in the US this year.  It has been raging since August 17th and has burned 369 square miles (954 square kilometers).  

This update from NASA's Earth Observatory shows the progression of the fire from August 19 through September 2nd.

The second image is from the Landsat 8 satellite.

More Orbital Images from California's Rim Fire

Fire fighters are getting the upper hand on the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park.  These Images from the NASA Earth Observatory Site show smoke billowing from the fire that has burned almost 360 square miles.

California's Rim Fire as seen from Space

Every once in a while it is cool to switch from looking up at the sky to looking back down on the Earth, especially if that view is from orbit.

The Rim Fire raging near California's Yosemite National Park is roughly the size of the city of Chicago, but how big is that exactly?  This article from NASA's Earth Observatory shows us.
